Dental sealants
Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth, which are the molars where most childhood cavities develop. The grooves on these teeth are deep and hard to clean, even with good brushing. Sealants fill those grooves and create a smooth surface that's much easier to keep clean.
How do sealants work?
The process is quick and painless - no shots, no drilling:
We clean and dry the tooth
A safe bonding solution is applied so the sealant sticks
The sealant is painted on as a liquid and hardens in seconds with a curing light
The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth, and your child can eat and drink normally right after.
When should my child get sealants?
The best time is shortly after their permanent molars come in, which is typically around age 6 for the first molars and age 12 for the second molars. Dr. Kao will let you know when the time is right during your child's regular checkups.
Are sealants really worth it?
Current research shows that sealants can prevent the majority of cavities on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. Given that they're quick, painless, and covered by most dental insurance plans, they're one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your child's dental health.
Ready to schedule your child's next checkup?
Dr. Kao recommends sealants as part of a comprehensive prevention approach that also includes regular cleanings, fluoride, good brushing habits, and a balanced diet.
