Sedation and comfort options
Whether your child feels anxious about dental procedures, has difficulty sitting still, or needs more involved treatment like fillings or extractions, Dr. Kao offers options to keep them comfortable and safe throughout.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that your child breathes through a small mask placed over their nose. It helps them relax while remaining fully awake and responsive. The effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed, and your child can return to normal activities right away.
Nitrous oxide is a good option for children who are mildly anxious or cooperative but need a little extra calm during a procedure.
Sedation for restorative procedures
For more extensive treatments, or for children who have significant anxiety, very young children, or children with special needs, Dr. Kao may recommend sedation. This allows your child to undergo treatment safely and comfortably, often completing what might otherwise require multiple stressful visits in a single appointment.
Dr. Kao follows the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for all sedation procedures. Your child's safety is always the first consideration, and he will walk you through every detail: what the sedation involves, how your child will feel, and what to expect before and after.
We take our time with this decision
Sedation is never the first option, and it's never taken lightly. Dr. Kao will always try the gentlest approach first and will only recommend sedation when it's clearly in your child's best interest. He'll explain why he's recommending it, what the alternatives are, and answer every question until you feel confident in the plan.
We prefer to schedule restorative and sedation procedures in the morning or early afternoon, when children tend to be most cooperative and comfortable.
Your child's comfort and safety always come first. If Dr. Kao recommends sedation, it's because he believes it's the best path to a positive outcome for your child. He'll never move forward until you're completely comfortable with the plan.
