Dental X-rays for children

Dental X-rays allow Dr. Kao to see things that aren't visible during a regular exam: developing teeth below the gumline, early signs of decay between teeth, bone health, and potential issues with tooth alignment. They're an important diagnostic tool, and we use them thoughtfully.

Are dental X-rays safe for my child?

Yes. We use digital X-rays, which produce significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. The amount of radiation in a dental X-ray is extremely small; about comparable to the background radiation you'd experience on a short airplane flight.

We also take protective measures, including lead aprons and thyroid collars, and we follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), meaning we use the minimum radiation necessary to get the information we need.

When does my child need X-rays?

Every child is different. Dr. Kao recommends X-rays based on your child's individual needs, including their cavity risk, dental development, and any concerns that arise during exams. We don't take X-rays on a rigid schedule; we take them when they'll provide information that helps your child.

For a first visit, X-rays can help establish a baseline. For ongoing care, they help us monitor development and catch problems early.

What can X-rays detect?

  • Cavities between teeth that aren't visible to the eye

  • Developing permanent teeth below the gumline

  • Issues with tooth roots or bone

  • Early signs of crowding or alignment problems

  • Infections or abscesses

Dr. Kao will always explain why an X-ray is being recommended and is happy to discuss any concerns you have. We never take X-rays just because it's been a certain amount of time - only when they'll genuinely help your child's care.
